Welcome to Pagosa Pilates!

Welcome to PAGOSA PILATES in beautiful Pagosa Springs, Colorado! I’m Lizzie Dickerson, and I’m trained in classical Pilates, a system that honors the teachings of Joseph H. Pilates, through the Power Pilates teacher training program in New York. I teach at Cindy Huston’s Body Shop, in the Town Terrace Building, 262 Pagosa St #104, Pagosa Springs, CO 81147. We’re right across from Riff Raff Brewing!

A little about me…I discovered Pilates as a result of a dance-related injury in 1995. At that time, I was told that I needed back surgery if I was ever going to dance again. I had ruptured disks, pinched nerves, the works. My dance teacher at that time suggested I try Pilates. I was able to heal without surgery, and I’ve stayed very healthy, fit, and injury-free as a result of my Pilates practice.

As a result, I love helping people in special situations to regain mobility and improve their quality of life. If you are a senior citizen wondering about beginning exercise, Pilates is a safe and easily adaptable way to help stay flexible and address concerns such as osteoporosis. Are you a skier or boarder? Me too! Let me help you build endurance and protect against injury! Are you already injured or dealing with a medical condition? I can work with your doctor or PT to develop a personalized plan to get you moving again!

What’s the difference between Classical and Contemporary Pilates?

My training focuses on honoring the integrity of the original exercises developed by Joseph Pilates. Joe gave us a set progression of exercises that move from lying down to kneeling to standing, incorporate breathing, and that, over time, add difficulty. There are many instructors since Joe who have modified the equipment or the exercises, leading to contemporary schools of Pilates certifications.  There are talented contemporary instructors who have developed the exercises to suit differing circumstances that add to the richness of the Pilates experience. What’s really important to know is that my main focus is creating a workout for YOU that addresses what YOU need to get strong and healthy.

Joe Pilates created a unique system of exercises that works- and works very well- to get you strong and healthy in pretty short order, and unlike many forms of exercise, it’s easy to fall in love with doing it! It’s not like so many forms of exercise where you don’t get results so you get discouraged, or it’s just too plain hard. It’s easy to modify and adapt the Pilates system to the needs of the individual client. Pilates is great for both exercise and strength training, as well as rehabilitation after an injury or surgery. Joe Pilates was really on to something with his work, and I try my best to use that teaching to help my clients heal through the system of movement that Joe and his students developed.
